Board Member - George Henry Clay

Picture
George Henry Clay is President and General Manager of Clay & Associates, Inc., an independent Insurance Agency and Government Affairs Company founded in 1973. He was also President and GM of WBIL AM/FM Radio in Tuskegee, AL from 1974 to 1996. He was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, District 82 in 1989 and the Senate in 1994 where he served until 2002. While in the Senate, he chaired the Health Committee, Vice Chair of Banking & Insurance and on the Legislative Council.

Senator Clay was born in Chicago, IL and grew up in Birmingham, AL. He attended Howard University where he earned a BS Degree in Business Administration in 1964 and did further studies at the University of Colorado in Communications and Leadership Development.

He has served on the Board of Trustees of Tuskegee University, Board of Directors of Alabama Exchange Bank, Colonial Bank (Regional), Alabama State Health Planning and Development Agency (SHPDA) and the Alabama State Health Coordinating Committee (SHCC).

Senator Clay’s special honors include: Montgomery Advertiser, Meritorious Award as State Representative in 1991; Meritorious Award as State Senator in 1995; Law Maker of the Year, Alabama Independent Insurance Agents Association and many others.

While a member of the House of Representatives, he proposed and passed legislation for the establishment of an Alabama Tuskegee Airmen Commission which initiated efforts to honor the Tuskegee Airmen and build a museum. Before this legislation, there was little attention given to the accomplishments of the airmen and women. These efforts continued with assistance from then Congressman Bob Riley and National Park Service resulting in what is recognized today as the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site at Moton Field.

Senator Clay is married to Patricia Nettles Clay and has two sons and five grandchildren.
